How To Exercise When You Have No Time

You've heard it said many times before: Eat well and exercise. To lose weight, maintain a healthy body weight, and keep in shape, you have to exercise. You have to eat well. And, you have to do these two things on an ongoing basis.

"But I don't have time to exercise," you say?

That's fine. I know what you mean.

When you say that you don't have time to exercise, I imagine you're saying that you don't have time to commute to the gym, find a parking spot, sign on the waiting board for the treadmill, waste time by talking to others, wait for others to be done exercising, and so on.

I don't have time for that either.

In this article, I'm going to give you three time-saving solutions that will help you to get into better shape, without having to wast your time by going to the gym when it's busy. These three solutions, which I'll go into further detail below, are:

    1. Exercising in bed

    2. Exercising at home.

    3. Exercising during breaks at work.

Yes, the first one sounds rediculous, doesn't it? Well, it probably sounds rediculous to you because you haven't considered it as a viable exercise option. However, it's good to know that flexibility is one of the 4 components of fitness. True, complete fitness isn't just aerobic capacity and resistance capacity--flexibility is also a part of overall fitness.

As for the second time-saving solution, no, you don't need a home gym to exercise at home. Below, I'll give you a few exercises that I used to follow to get into top shape.

The third time-saving solution is probably the least convenient, but I've included it here to open your eyes to all the alternatives. If you're serious, you can bring a change of clothes with you to work, and do exercises during your noon-hour breaks (or even during those shorter breaks).

Let's look at each of these three in more detail.

    Exercising In Bed

No, you may not be able to run in bed or lift weights in bed. What you can do in bed, before getting up, is stretch your legs, your arms, and whatever else you want to stretch. You may have to pull down the covers to do so, but do it. If you experiment, you'll find that you can stretch quite a few muscles in bed.

I said earlier that flexibility is a crucial part of overall fitness. For years, I made the mistake of thinking that flexibility was just the stretches you did before and after a workout. I never gave flexibility itself the additional attention and time it deserved as part of an overall fitness program. I now know that flexibility should be considered with as much thought as weight training and aerobics.

    Exercising At Home

I got into the best shape of my life without really ever going to the gym. I did this by using good old running, push-ups, and sit-ups. At home, you can run up and down the stairs. You can do push-ups or press-ups, and you can even try your hand at one-handed push-ups.

    Exercising At Work

Yes, take a change of clothes with you if you have to. On your breaks and, provided that your breaks are long enough to justify changing into gym attire, do a mini-workout, then change back.  It may be hard to leave your friends in the staff room and go out for a run or a brisk walk, but just start by doing it every Friday. Then, do the same on Mondays, and gradually add more sessions to your work week.
