The definition of ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE has been described as therapeutic and preventive health practices. The therapeutic effect refers to any result of a given treatment if desirable or beneficial, whether it was expected or unexpected. Alternative medicine practices  often incorporate spiritual, metaphysical, and religious components and are often untested. They can be newly developed approaches to healing. Once an alternative medical approach is shown to be safe and effective, it may be adopted by the medical community and is no longer considered "alternative". Other terms sometimes used interchangeably with alternative medicine are homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, and herbal medicine. These do not generally follow accepted modern medical practices and don't always have a scientific explanation for why they work.

Yoga techniques, acupuncture, herbal supplements, massage -- all have a place in alternative medicine.

Alternative medicines are gaining a respected place in the traditional medical community, but there are pitfalls to avoid if you decide to choose non-traditional treatment. Don't keep your doctor out of the loop. S/He should be a valued partner in whatever course you ultimately decide to pursue.
