10 Tips For Eating Healthy

Healthy eating and proper nutrition is so very important for maintaining healthy bodily functions and avoiding disease. If you find that you currently struggle to eat a healthy diet, you may also discover that it can be difficult to start and maintain such a plan. However, YOU CAN DO IT! To truly get the most out of this body you have been given, it is so important for you to get started on the right track. Much like a properly tuned engine, your body needs the right mixture of fuel to function at peak efficiency.

==> Read Labels and Learn What They Mean

First and foremost when starting a healthy eating regimen is to take the time to learn about which foods are the healthiest for you and how they benefit your body. Most people understand that fruits and vegetables are good for you, but few people understand why. Just as importantly, you need to learn which ingredients in foods are bad for you and why.

==> Knowledge Really is Power!

The key is learning about vitamins and nutrients. When you understand how specific vitamins and nutrients work in your body and which foods best supply your body with these vitamins and nutrients, you will be more likely to make these healthy choices for yourself. Find a good book on diet and nutrition and you are well on your way to a healthier body. If you don't have time or don't care to read, there are many health related audio books as well available for you to listen and learn, while doing other tasks.

==> Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Eating healthier may require you to rid your home of all foods that do not fit into 'healthy' categories. Limit junk foods as much as possible so that you will not be tempted to snack during idle time. Keep only healthy snacks like carrot sticks, broccoli, cauliflower, celery or dry roasted peanuts on hand. If you find that you struggle with the sweets, substitute fresh fruits that are naturally sweet, like apples, grapes or oranges.

==> But, How Do I know What to Buy?

Shopping your local grocery store for healthy products can be very tricky. A quick glance around the store will quickly uncover signs labeling food as natural, organic, fat free, low in this, less in that - but what is the difference, really? By understanding what specific names and keywords mean, you can decide if you should spend more money on that 'healthy' product or if it is simply a marketing ploy.

==> Natural

This is a term many times associated with fruits and vegetables. The use of the word natural is a clever form of marketing to assure you the product is safe. After all, fruits and vegetables are natural and natural is another way of saying they were formed by nature, right? Unless it is a new food that has been developed and processed, the product is natural. Sometimes natural is confused with organic.

==> Organic

Organic foods are foods grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Supporting growers of organic foods provides two primary benefits, one for you and one for society. 1) By eating organic foods, you are avoiding chemicals and toxins that are used in traditional methods of growing the food. 2) You are helping the environment because fewer chemicals are being introduced into nature.

==> What About Cost?

Organic products tend to be more expensive. To save money, one option is to purchase vegetables and fruits that you can peel, like bananas and oranges, without searching for the organic section in the store. Once you have discarded the peeling, the chemical impact will be less significant. With food items like apples, where you often eat the peeling, you might opt for organic. Regardless of what you buy, however, ALWAYS rinse your food thoroughly before eating.

==> Preparing to Eat Healthy

When preparing for a new healthy diet, you should take into consideration your schedule for meals. Although convenient, eating fast food at odd times of the day, is not going to provide you with the best nutrition. Plan ahead - instead of grabbing that burger to go, take a sack lunch to work, complete with fresh fruits and vegetables. Plan your healthy meals for the evening as well by cooking ahead (slow cooker) if you anticipate having little time when you get home.

==> Let's Climb that Mountain One Step at a Time

Start with small steps on your new program. Replace one soda per day with a glass of water. If you eat fast food every day for lunch, try replacing that every other day at first, again with fresh fruits and vegetables. By taking small steps, it does not seem as if you are cutting out all of the foods you love. This will enable you to take your time and learn about all of the healthy foods which you will come to love as well.
